Yappy Hour 2025 planning is in full swing! For our new members, Yappy Hour is our annual fundraiser for the Humane Society. In collaboration with Apocalypse Brew Works and Brewgrass Homebrew Supply, our members brew a beer, either at home or at the brew-in at Apocalypse, and then sell that beer during the event. 100% of proceeds go to the Humane Society.
This event is run 100% by LAGERS members and Apocalypse. It does not happen without your help! Brewing is only half of the battle. Plan on being at the event on October 4th to volunteer. A sign-up sheet for volunteer shifts will go out soon.
What to expect this year:
- Our goal is to raise $5,000. To do so, we’d need every single active member to participate and brew a beer.
- Brewgrass Homebrew Supply will cover the costs of malt and hops. (Thanks, John!) Malt and hops must be in stock at Brewgrass. (What’s in stock? Give them a call at 502-552-4274.) Submit your recipe 24 hours in advance, and pick up your malt and hops from Brewgrass the week before the brew-in. Members can supply their own ingredients and are responsible for any adjuncts.
- When you go to pick up your ingredients at Brewgrass, just let them know you are picking up supplies for Yappy Hour. No need to call beforehand.
- Apocalypse Brew Works (ABW) will provide the yeast. (Thanks!) Options are S-05, S-04, Lager, and Kveik. You can also supply your (non-funky) yeast. Philly sour is allowed. Expect fermentation temperatures at ABW to be between 65-70°F.
- You must submit your recipe even if you are bringing your own ingredients. Yeast must be pitched at ABW to be sold at Yappy Hour.
- Maximum original gravity (OG) for recipes is 1.060. Maximum 10 gallons per member (i.e., two 5-gal batches or one 10-gal batch). Smaller batch sizes accepted!
- Our annual Yappy Hour Brew-in is on Sunday, August 24, starting at 9 am. Bring your brewing system to ABW, and brew a beer for Yappy Hour! If you want to learn more about brewing, come to ABW to see the many different systems members use. Bring homebrew and potluck-style snacks, and consider buying a beer from ABW. If you are new to LAGERS or homebrewing, this is a great chance to meet fellow homebrewers, watch them brew, and ask questions. Feel free to attend even if you can’t brew that day. You do not need to be a member to attend the brew-in. You do need to be a member to brew a beer for Yappy Hour. Something to keep in mind: the $25 cost of a yearly membership is less than the cost of the ingredients for a batch of beer. :)
- If your brewing system is not mobile, bring your wort to ABW on the 25th to pitch your yeast.
- Members are responsible for all transfers and kegging of their beer. They also must provide their own fermenters and kegs. ABW will carbonate the beers, but members must keg beers by Monday, September 22nd. Expect your keg to remain at ABW until your beer sells out!
