Hello LAGERS, and welcome to the first newsletter of 2023!
I hope you all had a fantastic 2022! It was a year of big change for the LAGERS. Greg left his position as President and I took over several months ago. For much of the year, we were still getting our feet back under us from COVID. But we were able to bring back Yappy Hour, the Tailspin competition, and consistent in-person meetings. We had talks from club members and professional brewers that hopefully taught you a few new tricks! Overall, it was a good year and a step back to normal. 2023 promises to be a big year for us. We’re busy organizing competitions, educational talks, parties, and much more. I look forward to seeing everyone at an upcoming meeting or event.
December Meeting Notes
- Evan Brill gave an awesome talk on thiols and genetically modified yeast. We sampled two hazy pale ales he brewed. One with Omega’s special thiol yeast and Phantasm Thiol Powder, and one without. I think most people perceived a noticeable difference between the two, and it was fun to get to try them side by side.
- We had our white elephant gift exchange. We learned that a Funk Factory bottle can survive a four-foot drop onto a concrete floor!
- I told everyone to expect a year-end survey to be available soon. I’m still working on this!
- We’ll get back to having parties starting this Spring! Stay tuned for details on this.
Tailspin Competition
Right now, we have 9 entrants with 17 entries. Entries will be accepted at Apocalypse Brew Works from 1/17-20 during normal business hours. Make sure you bring two bottles, labels attached with rubber bands. The rest of the details and the sign-up sheet are right here.
Yappy Hour Leftovers
Speaking of Apocalypse, Leah and the team now have the leftovers from Yappy Hour on draft. Beers will go on one at a time until the keg is empty. She also transferred all our beers into her own kegs, so you can pick up your empty keg during normal business hours.
January Meeting
Our January meeting will be 1/16, 6:30 PM, at Akasha. We don’t have a speaker lined up at this point. If you would like to give a talk, send me an email. Even without a speaker, we’ll still have some fun! I might line up a blind tasting or something else along those lines. We also have our best beer on the table competition that we do every month. As always, you do not need to be a member to attend.
We Bought an Electric All-in-one
LAGERS has purchased a small Anvil Foundry electric brewing kettle. This is a great way to teach people the joys of homebrewing! The idea is that we’ll use it as an educational tool via brew-ins at various beer events (might even brew a beer at Tailspin!). At some point soon, after we have very detailed instructions for use created, we’ll also borrow it out to club members for 2-3 days at a time.
