Homebrew Certifications, if any (BJCP, AHA member, Cicerone, etc…)?

AHA and LAGERS member.  I have judged the past two years at the State Fair.  I plan on getting BJCP certified at some point.

How did you first get into homebrewing?

In 2006, I quit smoking.  When researching tips on how to quit, everyone said to stay away from alcohol.  I wasn’t much of a drinker at the time, so this really wasn’t a big deal.  After three months without a cigarette, I was out to eat with my wife.  I decided I could have a beer after going that long without nicotine and, on a whim, I decided I wanted to try something different.  The restaurant had 4 beers on tap: Budweiser and Miller Lite, both of which I had had plenty of times before.  They also had Newcastle Brown Ale, which I had vaguely remembered trying before.  The other beer was one I had never heard of called Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.  I can’t remember what I ate that night, but I had three of those Sierra Nevadas and was amazed at what I was tasting.  I went into full beer nerdery after that and, around 2010, I got my first homebrew equipment and ingredient kit from My Old Kentucky Homebrew.

How long have you been homebrewing and how often do you brew?

I have been brewing since 2010.  I probably only get to brew about 10 times a year right now, due to the fact that I have two daughters that keep me way too busy.

What is your favorite style of beer to brew? Why?

I like brewing American Pale Ales because they are my favorite to drink.  I like hops, but I like the malty balance that a pale ale has as opposed to an IPA.  (Though I love those, too.)

What is your favorite homebrew recipe?

Right now it’s my Blonde Ale, Briefly Blonde.  It’s pretty simple, but I’m proud of the Best of Show win at the State Fair.  I’m looking forward to brewing it a Apocolaypse Brew Works.

What is your favorite commercial beer or brewery? Why?

Sierra Nevada is probably my favorite brewery, partially due to sentimental reasons.  I toured their NC facility and it was amazing.

What is the setup you use to brew beer? Favorite piece of equipment?

My setup is pretty simple.  I have a 10 gallon cooler mash tun.  I batch sparge and use an immersion chiller.  My favorite piece of equipment is probably my Anvil brew kettle, since it’s the most expensive piece of equipment I have.

What is a single change you feel has significantly improved your beer?

Fermentation temperature control.  I have an old fridge in my garage with a heating pad in it that I set my fermentor on.  I have a dual stage temperature controller hooked up to both, though I usually only need one at a time.

What are your goals and aspirations as a brewer?

After years of brewing completely different recipes each time I brew, I want to dial in a few recipes to get them exactly where I want them. Also, I would lo tove participate in some of the LAGERS brew-ins.  I alwasy seem to have something going on the prevents me from going.

What is one homebrew myth you believe in? Don’t believe in?

I try not to believe in myths.

Any tips or tricks for new brewers?

Brew what you want to drink.  There are some beers that are really fun and interesting to try, but do you really want 5 gallons of them?

Favorite hobby outside of homebrewing?

Playing guitar.
