Next Meeting: Bring $1 on March 18 for LAGERS Cup

Join us at our monthly meeting! And if you’re submitting your KY Common to the competition, bring at least 64oz.

At the meeting, the member with the most votes will bring home half of the pot. The first place winner will have 10 points (8 if tie) in the overall standings and take an early lead for the 2024 competition. Second place will have 7 points (6 if tie).

The scoring structure rewards participation! If March’s winner doesn’t participate in the remaining three quarters, they will lose to a member who participates in those three quarters. (A member who submits three beers across the year would also beat a runner-up who only participates in one more quarter.)

Before the meeting, learn more about the KY Common style guidelines. (Note: This is not a BJCP-sponsored competition. We’re providing this information for club members to learn more about the style in advance of the LAGERS Cup.)

LAGERS BJCP Judges: Sit for April 13 Judging Exam

Improve your beer judging (tasting) exam score! We have several non-club members interested, but we’re saving spots for LAGERS members for a tasting exam on April 13 at 10am in Utica, IN.

Contact lagersclub@gmail.com by March 19th if you are already a BJCP judge and are looking to improve your tasting exam score. On March 20th, exam registration opens to non-members. Seats will go quickly!

NHC Registration Closed

The National Homebrew Competition registration is now closed. Good luck to all LAGERS members who entered!

February BBOT Winner: Brandon’s Amber PBJ

Congrats to Brandon for winning last meeting’s BBOT with his Amber PBJ! Here are some of his thoughts about his beer:

What do you think makes this style or batch special?

Brandon: This was a recipe I was working on to evoke a peanut butter and jelly sandwich — Think back to your grade school lunches! I planned to also enter the beer into the Tailspin competition, but the challenge was how to suggest the “jelly” without using actual fruit. In this first iteration, I decided to pitch WLP066 (London Fog) and drive up some fruity esters with temperature. It wasn’t enough. The grist included approximately 17.5% Rye Malt against a base of Maris Otter (65%) to build the “sandwich bread” malt backbone.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to brew a similar beer?

Brandon: Experiment with actual fruits and brew something else for Tailspin. (Just kidding… kind of!) In addition to fruiting, I would explore other approaches to sanitize and add the PB2 powdered peanuts to the beer. I used a high-proof Everclear which I can still detect through both the nose and palate of the beer.
