The LAGERS’ NEWZ! – July 2006 - Vol I |
Meeting Notes For July
The Monthly meeting got off to a late start due to circumstances beyond the Officers’ control. Apparently, the owner forgot to bring out the key and to turn on the A.C. A call brought out the owner, but failed miserably in cooling things down. Talk about a warm meeting with hot topics! A lesson was learned on how to avoid the problem for any future sessions held at the Spring Street meeting house – more about this later.
A fairly good crowd of many of the usual together with a few of the unusual (Gus for one!) showed up in time for some business to get taken care prior to the raffle and the open discussion period (the sharing of brews & talking to seldom seen friends period). Highlights as follows:
State Fair Homebrew Competition Aug. 13th.
Bob Reed once again shared a lot of the State Fair Information. The time for submissions has passed, but Bob was out beating the bushes for those Hard to Find judges & stewards. A signup sheet was passed around for both.
More judges, stewards, and volunteers to man the booth are desperately needed, so if you have the time and/or inclination, please contact one of the officers or Bob Reed.
The actual entries (homebrew) must be dropped off at the Fairgrounds on the Saturday before the fair starts (Aug. 12th) between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The judging is traditionally held the following Day (Sunday the 13th) and judging begins at noon. The letter that comes with the labels can be used to get in free when dropping off your brews, and passes are available for non-entry judges prior to the competition. Just let someone know. The Label Competition is expected to be the same as last year.
Plans for updating the LAGERS & FOSSILS literature to be given out at the State Fair was mentioned as a possibility, but only time will tell if any progress will be made.
Rick Buckman volunteered to get bread & bottled water for the judging event. Leah Dienes has been kind enough to once again agree to organize the stewards and already has ideas on how she plans to make everything run even smoother. Bill Krauth agreed (by proxy) to manning the cooler. Jane Krauth has volunteered to do the paperwork (tallying, etc.). Ellen Reed is going to help Jane as needed.
Volunteers are also needed to come out to the KENTUCKY EXPOSITION CENTER on Tuesday, August 15th to help set up the clubs’ booth, and again on August 28th to help tear it down. (The Homebrew Booth will be moved this year due to the construction of the East Wing – should be nearby).
As with everything, twice as many workers can get the work done in half the time! – Contact one of the officers or Bob Reed for details. It’s fun, a chance to meet other members in a non-meeting atmosphere, and an opportunity to support your club!
Chuck & Terri Harp’s
2nd Annual Mid-Summer
Night Party
July 29th 6:00 - ?
Chuck & Terri are once again hosting a party for ALL FOSSILS & LAGERS – as if we or They need an excuse to party! Beer, BBQ, and even a bit of Thai food (to wake up your taste buds from the summer doldrums) will be offered.
Something new this year, everyone is asked to bring a bottle of something that can be cellared for next year’s party.
High gravity sampling (the high gravity stuff that was left over from last year) is scheduled to commence around 11:00 pm. for all who have a designated driver or are spending the night.
Directions: From downtown Louisville take I-64 east. Go past I-264 (Watterson) until you come to I-265 (Gene Snyder). Take I-265 North (it’s the ramp underneath the freeway). The first exit will be Shelbyville road (exit 27) … turn right. Go East on Shelbyville road for 3.6 miles, then turn left on Long Run Road. (Hint: Long run road is exactly 1.0 miles past the Eastwood fire station. Do NOT make a left at the street where you see the sign saying "Long Run Park", because that street is flat rock road).
Parking: Once you turn left onto Long Run Road, Chuck & Terri’s house is the first driveway on the right. If you can park on the grass on either side of the driveway, go for it. Once those spots are full, please park on either side of Long Run Road.
If you want to spend the night, Chuck & Terri have a couple of guest rooms, lots of couch and floor space, and even some room in the unfinished part of the "Deneen wing". If you want to bring a tent, go ahead.
There will of course be beer and food, but if you want to bring a dish, please feel free.
If you want to bring some beer, please feel very free to do so.
If you want to bring a keg of homebrew, please feel very, very free to do so.
If you want to bring kids, go ahead (just remember to take them with you when you leave).
Beer & Sweat Aug. 19th.
New Location – Downtown Cincinnati!
Word has come that the Garfield Suites hotel for the 2006th Beer & Sweat Competition has been filled. You might still be able to get a room there, but not at the B&S group rate.
Arrangements have been made at the Terrace Hotel, 15 W. 6th Street, Cincinnati, OH. This hotel is 2 blocks from B&S. Call 513-381-4000 (888-279-8260) and ask for the Beer and Sweat rate. (They are giving us the same $79 and $109 rates.) If there are any problems, ask for Martine Walker.
On a separate note, the Bloatarians (our hosts of the B&S event) are asking for FOSSILS & LAGERS volunteers and support to host the 2007 (not sure of year) National AHA event.
New Monthly LAGERS Meeting Place??
With the impending sale (building up for Sale), and the limited month to month opportunity to continue to hold meetings at the Spring Street meeting site, Jane K. made a motion and Joel of the BBC Taproom seconded the decision, to hold our monthly meetings at the BBC Taproom. Maureen Capshew made a motion to hold the October 16 meeting at the BBC Taproom. Details to be announced at a later date.
The Third Annual Brew at the Zoo to be held August 26th frm 4:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Details can be found at http://www.louisvillezoo.org/events/brew.htm
The FOSSILS & LAGERS will have a table, and the finest brews from BBC Beer Company, Bluegrass Brewing Company, Browning’s Brewery, Cumberland Brews, The New Albanian Brewing Company, Hofbrauhaus - Newport, Lexington Brewing Company, Bell’s Brewery, Broad Ripple Brewery, Oaken Barrel Brewing Company and Upland Brewing Company will be available. Maureen & Bob Capshews’ Annual Fruit Beer, Cider & Mead Event –
September 23!
The date for Maureen & Bob’s Annual LAGERS’ Fruit Beer, Cider & Mead was postponed a week from September 16th (Maureen’s birthday and Anniversary) to the 23rd due to a scheduling conflict with U of L. After a lengthy discussion, a push for Brats(?) as the meal of choice was decided upon. Hopefully, arrangements will be made (as yet to be determined) to accommodate the vegetarians and non-brat crowds.
Bob Capshews Announces Rocky Meadow Orchard Project!
Never one to be bored and having a passion for Pears, Bob announced at this month’s meeting his latest endeavor – Restoring a Mature Pear Orchard to Production. To this end, Bob offered LAGER members the opportunity for both sweat & monetary investment in exchange for apple and pear juice. Chores range from tagging to thinning trees. Please contact Bob Capshew if you have any interest!
Otter Creek LAGERS/ FOSSILS’ Picnic Campsite for June 2007 has been reserved.
New LAGERS T-Shirts are available in new and vibrant colors at a fantastic rate of $12 for members, $15 for non-members. Get yours today!
Many of you know the Wine Makers Supply Owners on Westport Rd – Dina & her husband - Dave Streckfus.
You probably also know that Mr. Streckfus has been ill with cancer for some time. Mr. Steckfus was recently placed into Hospice and is not expected to return home.
A friend of theirs has been running the store during their absence and advises anyone needing homebrew or wine supplies to please call the store first to confirm the store being open. The number is 502-425-1692.
Please keep Mr. & Mrs. Streckfus in your prayers. They have been invaluable members in clubs for years.
Don’t forget to support our Local Breweries, supply shops, and liquor stores!
